My First Quarter

Here is my first quarter classes and the schedule that I put together during advising and orientation. I had an amazing quarter and really enjoyed all of my classes. To hear more in depth about this quarter go to my first quarter reflections

To summarize: I loved all of my classes, they all challenged my to look at different perspectives and study in different ways. I disliked having to get up at 8:00 AM every morning and having my classes spread out throughout the day (to see how I changed this for next quarter click here).

Notable Classes and Classwork

This quarter I took Spanish 202, Introduction to Disability Studies, Chemistry 142, Honors 100, a Collegium Seminar (Does your computer think when you put it to sleep?), and a Pre-Health Seminar. Two were especially great classes, worthy of being highlighted.

This is a reflection paper that I wrote for my Introduction to Disability Studies class. I really enjoyed this class and especially this project because this is something that I want to continue to pursue and get a major in. I enjoyed being able to simply write about the knowledge that I learned in this class and my own personal experiences for this paper. This class reaffirmed my desire to major in Disability Studies and now I want to pursue more classes looking at race, religion and gender. This class examined these three issues in connection to disability and had me look at the world from a different perspective. This reflection paper allowed me to express all the ideas that I had been learning about in my class and receive feedback for my first college paper.

Coming into the University of Washington, my lowest grade in High School was in a Spanish class. I was really nervous that there would be a repeat here at the University, but I am determined to be fluent in Spanish, so I continued taking Spanish. This is my first of five Spanish Essays that I would write this quarter. This paper taught me about how much I do have to learn, as shown by the many pen marks on the paper, yet it also shows that I have learned Spanish and I am capable of doing this coursework. From this essay, I learned that I need to continue to focus on all of the small details and pay attention to grammar and word choice. From the class as a whole, I learned about the differences between a University and high school. While both had few students in the classroom, here at the University of Washington students are really motivated to speak and learn. Students actively want to become fluent and put all of their effort into their courses, something that I have done through high school and is really exciting for me here at the University.

Notes About My Other Classes

My other classes were great too.

Chemistry 142 was a good review class. I really enjoyed all of our classroom demonstrations and the labs. This was my first and only large lecture hall; I found that I was able to adapt quickly.

Yes, this picture was taken in my Chemistry 142 class on Halloween.

My collegium seminar was really fun. It was focused on Neurobiology as well as philosophy about what consciousness is. This was a great class to be in as it was a more personal setting and I got to explore a topic that I am interested in.

My pre-health seminar talked about what Medical Schools want to see. As a Pre-Med student, I wanted to know what I need to do right now to get in. Through this class, I am excited to get involved in volunteering and I know the requirements for me to accomplish this goal.
